Saint Francis (PA) Tops Highlanders, 3-1

, PA – Colin Sherwin and John Skarupa led the way notching 15 and 13 kills for Saint Francis (PA) on Sunday in a 3-1 victory over visiting NJIT in non-conference men's volleyball action.

 

The Red Flash picked up its first win of the 2011 season topping the Highlanders (25-15, 25-18, 21-25, 25-14). NJIT falls to 1-5 on the season.

 

Sherwin hit .417 for the match and posted a match-high 15 kills, which was a career-high for the freshman.  Sherwin also added four digs.  Junior Skarupa hit .611 with a career-high 13 kills on 18 attempts and just two errors.

 

Junior setter Ryan Williams piled up a match-high 38 assists and recorded four digs defensively for the Red Flash.

 

The Highlanders were led by freshman Herman Kantushov with a career-high 11 kills.  Kantushov finished the match with a .375 hitting percentage on 24 attempts and two errors.

 

Andrei Stoyanow and Kevin Van Oss posted eight kills and four total blocks apiece while Doug Battersby added seven kills for NJIT.

 

Junior Adam Gustafson recorded a season-high 31 assists Sunday.  Gustafson added four digs and two block assists for NJIT.  Kantushov led NJIT defensively with seven digs.

 

Saint Francis, hit .583 in the first set for a 25-15 win.  The Red Flash opened on a 7-3 run that started on a Skarupa kill.  The Red Flash lead became as great as nine points when Chad Martson recorded a kill to make it 22-13.  Sherwin iced the first set with a kill to make it 25-15.

 

In the second set, tied at 12-12 after NJIT's Van Oss kill, the Red Flash scored three straight points, including a block from Martson and Skarupa and a kill from Skarupa.  After Skarupa forced set point with a block to make it 24-1, the Red Flash took the set 25-18 on an NJIT error.

 

NJIT started on a 7-3 run in the third set that featured two blocks from Van Oss, but Saint Francis eventually slimmed the deficit to 22-20 on a Sherwin kill and a Markus Schulze ace.  The Highlanders won the set 25-21 on an Saint Francis attack error.

 

In the final set, the score was just 9-8 in favor of Saint Francis, but a 3-0 run on an Adam Roche kill, forced NJIT head coach Ryan McNeil to call timeout trailing 12-8.  The Red Flash were in control on the rest of the way, outscoring the Highlanders on a 13-6 pace to win the set 25-14.

 

The Highlanders will host Kean on Thursday at 7pm in the Fleisher Athletic Center.
