Men’s Tennis Tops Saint Joseph’s and La Salle Sunday

PHILADEPHIA –
The NJIT men's tennis team improved to 11-5 on the season posting a pair of wins Sunday afternoon over Saint Joseph's (5-2) and La Salle (6-0).

 

In the Highlanders first match of the day, NJIT clinched the doubles points and then took four of the six singles matches defeating Saint Joseph's, 5-2.

 

After Saint Joseph's captured the top doubles match, the Highlanders, behind Fraser Croad and Dimitri Athans won at the second spot, 8-6.  Stephen Erickson and Bryan Keelan also won at third doubles 8-1, to clinch the team point.

 

Senior Erickson earned a victory over Michael Stauble, 6-3, 6-2 at first singles.  Carl Lundquist defeated Matt Prusack 6-1, 3-0 retired at second singles. 

 

At fourth singles, Diego Abreu was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Tommy Gates while senior Cosmin Chiujdea won at fifth singles in three sets, 7-5, 3-5, 11-9 over Lucho Perez-Abreu.

 

At La Salle, the Highlanders swept the singles competition en route to a 6-0 victory over La Salle. Doubles competition was not played.

 

NJIT won four singles matches in straight sets -- Erickson (#1 singles; 6-0, 6-1); Croad (#2 singles; 6-0, 6-1); Abreu (#3 singles; 6-1, 6-4); Keelan (#6 singles; 6-2, 6-0).

 

Sophomore Dan Salomon defeated Fernando Tovia 6-2, 3-6, 12-10 at fourth singles while Athans was a 6-1, 0-6, 6-2 winner at fifth singles.

 

NJIT will return to action on Monday, April 5 when they visit Fairfield at 3pm.
