NEWARK, NJ—Visiting Rutgers-Newark swept three competitive sets from NJIT Tuesday night, defeating the Highlanders, 30-26, 30-24, and 30-26 in Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Hay Division action in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
The Scarlet Raiders (4-9 overall, 4-0 EIVA Hay) made fewer errors and had a more diverse attack than NJIT (1-10, 1-3 EIVA Hay), while also controlling the blocking game.
NJIT freshman Christian Puszies had the most individual kills of anyone in the match (13), but he was the only Highlander in double-figures, while the visitors had three men with double-figure kills totals. They were: Marcin Madura (12 kills), Dane Mulligan (11), and Eduardo Hernandez (10).
Puszies also served a match-best two aces and was credited with a match-best 15 points on his 13 kills and two aces.
NJIT committed 23 attack errors to 15 for the visitors and 10 of NJIT's errors came on hits into Rutgers-Newark blocks. The Scarlet Raiders had a decided team blocking advantage of 10-3.
While the total attempts total was close (90 for Rutgers-Newark and 87 for NJIT), the combination of 14 more kills and eight fewer errors left Rutgers-Newark with a team hitting percentage of .378, while NJIT was at .138.
Jon Keller had eight total blocks (1 solo, 7 assists) for Rutgers-Newark and Hernandez added five individual blocks, all assists. No Highlander had more than two block assists.
Rutgers-Newark setter Jeff Zornig notched 44 assists, while freshman Matthew Lui registered 32 assists for the Highlanders.
The match digs leader was Rutgers-Newark's Mulligan, with 11, while Adam Gustafson led the Highlanders on the floor with eight digs.
There were three lead changes in each set and the match-clinching third set included 16 ties, but the Scarlet Raiders came out on top each time.
The victory Tuesday gave Rutgers-Newark Warren Street men's volleyball bragging rights for the year, as the Scarlet Raiders also defeated the Highlanders when the teams met on February 23 at Rutgers-Newark.
The Highlanders will return to action for another EIVA Hay Division matchup on Saturday at 2 pm, when they host Harvard in the Fleisher Athletic Center. It will be the first of two 2010 meetings between NJIT and Harvard.
