FORT MYERS, FL – The NJIT men's tennis team improved to 9-5 on the season edging Florida Gulf Coast, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon.
Florida Gulf Coast started off the match defeating the Highlanders at first and second doubles. At third doubles, Highlander duo Bryan Keelan and Dimitri Athans were 8-3 winners over Mitchell Lvovsky and Gabriel Echeverry.
Using the seven-point match scoring system, the team that wins the majority of doubles earns one point.
NJIT won four out of six singles matches recording three two-set wins. Senior Stephen Erickson was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at first singles; sophomore Carl Lundquist won 7-5, 6-4 at the second spot; and Dimitri Athans was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at the sixth spot.
Highlander Diego Abreu went the distance at fourth singles falling in the first set 6-3, and came back from being down 5-2 in the second frame for a 7-5 victory. Abreu earned the third point for NJIT with a 7-5 victory in the final set.
