Springfield Sweeps Highlanders

Matthew Lui finishes with 19 assists at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MASpringfield swept a non-conference men's volleyball match from visiting NJIT, 3-0, Tuesday night in Blake Arena.

 

Springfield ranked second in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III men's coaches top 15 poll won Tuesday's match taking the Highlanders by the scores of 30-17, 30-20, 30-15.

 

Freshman Christian Puszies , who was named Hay Division I Player of the Week, led the match and NJIT in kills with 13.  Puszies has recorded double-digit totals in the kills category in four out of seven contests for the Highlanders, with a career-high 24 kills at Sacred Heart (February 3).

 

Classmate Matthew Lui set 19 assists splitting time with Adam Gustafson at the setting position.  Gustafson added eight, playing in one set.  Libero Brady Smith led NJIT's floor defense with nine digs.

 

Springfield, which had a 13.5 to 2.0 team blocking advantage, was led by Greg Falcon with eight total blocks (1 solo, 7 assist).  Falcon knocked down six kills on seven attempts with no errors for a .857 attack percentage.

 

Alistar Matthews led Springfield's attack with a team-high 11 kills followed by Cal Palumbo (9), AJ Nally and Falcon (6).  Eric Shoemaker collected a match-high 26 assists while Matthews had three service aces.  Nally added six digs defensively for Springfield.

 

Next up for the Highlanders are Loyola-Chicago and Lewis of the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association. This will be the second meeting for NJIT and Lewis.  Both teams met in the Golden Dome Classic on January 23.
