PISCATAWAY, NJ -- Rutgers, with the help of some D-1 talent added to the roster for the game, was able to withstand a furious third period rally to defeat NJIT in overtime, 6-5.
After trading goals for a 2-2 tie the Scarlet Knights appeared to lock up the game with three straight goals at the end of the second period for a 5-2 lead.
However, the Highlanders came back with three unanswered goals of their own in the third period to tie the game and send it into overtime.
Just as he had done during regulation, NJIT transfer, Justin Gelesky (2g, 2a) left his imprint on the game with an assist for the game winning goal just 53 seconds into the extra period.
Scoring for the Highlanders were Jason Anagnos with his second goal of the year and Nicholas Wujek with a pair.
Edward Vinokur and Corrado Mancini each had a goal. Assists went to Vinokur, Colin McArdle, Mancini, Christopher Pawlik (2), Christopher Oertel and Robert Amos.
An apparent goal that would have been the difference was scored by NJIT in the second period, only to go unnoticed by the officials.
Friday night the Highlanders are on the road against last years champions, CW Post and on Sunday NJIT will host Muhlenberg College in a Halloween matinee. Game time is 1:45 PM.
