Outshot for the second game in a row, Rutgers prevailed in the finale of this Home-and-Home series with the help of some ACHA D-I players that were called down to reinforce the Scarlet Knights' roster 4-2.
Jay Ewan #41 on defense was big in more ways than one as his presence in the defensive zone helped goalie Matt Bruno steal one for the home team as the Highlanders out-played Rutgers for the 2nd game in a row only to come away empty-handed.
Again, as fatigue set in, penalties took over. After only being called for only 1 infraction in the 1st period, the Highlanders committed 10 penalties over the last 40 minutes of the game.
Scoring for NJIT were Colin McArdle from Oertel and Sala to cut the lead in half near the end of the 1st period followed by Jason Anagnos on a nice feed from Kevin Mahon as they exploited a 2 vs.1 on the power play late in the 2nd.
The game was tied and the momentum had swung in the Highlanders' favor, but it was not to be. Rutger's regained the lead before the end of the 2nd period and scored an insurance goal in the 3rd to seal it.
Mike Lipinski played well with 33 saves, but was outdone by Bruno who stopped 41 for the home team.
