PHILADELPHIA – NJIT women's fencer Andrea Camargo put together a strong performance at the Philadelphia Invitational Sunday afternoon as both fencing teams competed against five different opponents at Hutchinson Gym.
Camargo, a freshman from Ringwood, NJ, went 10-2 on the foil strip, competing against Sacred Heart, Drew, Fairleigh Dickinson and North Carolina. Teammate's Jennifer Ramos and Kristen Hagen each recorded a 7-5 mark. The women's foil squad went 9-0 against Fairleigh Dickinson.
Epee specialist Macarena Maldonado finished the day 4-8; with a 2-1 record against Fairleigh Dickinson. First-year fencer Karen Cilento and senior Vanessa Jorge picked up a victory each against Drew and Fairleigh Dickinson.
On the men's side, freshman Valentin Ischer went 5-7 on the day; with a 2-1 victory over Penn in the epee competition. Freshman Dylan Carr, competing at sabre also finished with a 5-7 overall record. Senior Zachary Hvizdak came out with a 2-1 win over North Carolina.
The NJIT fencing teams will return to action on Saturday, January 23 at the Army Invitational.
