NEWARK, NJ – The men's fencing team hosted the NJIT Invitational Sunday afternoon at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
Schools represented were: St. John's (MD), Maryland, Rutgers, Lafayette, Hunter and Drew.
The Highlanders were victorious against St. John's (MD), coming out on top 17-4. Captain Zachary Hvizdak, Paul Lorenz and Andrew Kirk won all three of their bouts in the epee competition. Freshmen Tony Sorgi and Matthew DeVenjo went 2-1 on the foil strip.
NJIT's next closest competition of the day came against Hunter as the Highlanders were edged 16-11. Sorgi went 2-1 at foil while teammate Peter Besada combined for a 2-0 record at sabre.
Kirk finished the day 11-7 (at epee); Sorgi was 10-8 (at foil), Hvizdak went 8-10 (at epee) and DeVenjo added a 7-11 record (at foil) for the Highlanders.
The Highlanders will return to action on Sunday, February 22 when they compete at the MACFA Tournament.
