Men’s Tennis Nips Sacred Heart, 4-3

WEST CALDWELL, NJ -- The New Jersey Institute of Technology men's tennis team hosted Sacred Heart at Tiger Tennis Fitness Saturday night. The Highlanders posted a 4-3 win, picking up its first win of the 2009 season.

 

NJIT swept the doubles contests and recorded wins at second, third and fourth singles.

 

Newcomer Carl Lundquist, who joined the men's tennis team this semester, teamed up with Cosmin Chiujdea and defeated Sacred Heart's Chris Ujkic and Adam Gart at No. 1 doubles, 8-6 while Steve Erickson and Jonathan Lang topped Nick Mazzarese and Kirill Kasyanov, 8-5 at No. 2 spot.  Picking up the last points in the doubles competition were seniors Dimitri Athans and Mike Sullivan, 8-6.

 

Lundquist, recorded his first collegiate win at No. 2 singles today with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Gart.  Chiujdea, went three sets at No. 3 singles, coming out on top over Pioneers Ujkic with a 7-6(7-0), 4-6, 6-3 victory.  Lang was victorious at No. 4 singles, defeating Jinal Shah 7-6(2), 6-3.

 

Sacred Heart tallied wins at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

 

The Highlanders will have a quick turnaround and travel to Jersey City on Sunday to face Saint Peter's.  The match is scheduled for 1:30pm.
