PHILADELPHIA, PA – The NJIT men's fencing team opened up its 2009 season competing at the Penn Multi-Meet in Hutchinson Gym.
Against Sacred Heart, Tony Sorgi led the way for the Highlanders winning two out of three of his bouts in the foil competition. Sophomore Andrew Kirk picked up two wins at epee and captain Zachary Hvizdak added another win as the Highlanders were edged 6-3. NJIT's Patrick Alvarado went 2-1 at sabre.
Facing Drew, Sorgi paced the foil squad with two wins. Kirk and Paul Lorenz added one win apiece in the epee contests.
The closest match of the day came against North Carolina as the Tarheels took a 5-4 edge in the foil contests. Sorgi went a perfect 3-0.
NJIT will return to action on January 18 at the Army Invitational.
