Highlanders Sweep Maritime Privateers to regain 1st Place.

Carmine Di Cosmo and Justin Gelesky opened the scoring in the 1st period with a pair of unassisted goals and the Highlanders won the 2nd and final meeting of the season with the Privateers. Maritime scored late in the period to cut the lead and put some pressure on NJIT, but Yllano Tubijella was up to the challenge in net.

Scoring was at a premium as James Wintjen put one in on a pretty move off a pass from Tim Cornely at 12:25 in the 2nd period. Maritime answered back 2 minutes later to again cut the lead to one goal, but that was as close as they would get. From the middle of the 2nd period to the end of the game the Highlanders kept the Privateers at bay, with some sharp goaltending and smart defensive play. Led by stalwart Chris Oertel, the shorthanded defensive corps performed admirably as Kevin Mahon, Mike Melillo and Matt Smarsh turned back the Privateers time after time.

At 9:01 of the 3rd with the face-off in the offensive zone Tim Cornely won it back to Steve Shepherd who directed over to Kevin McMorrow, who then lifted a backhander over the glove for an insurance goal.

The team gets a rare weekend off and they prepare to finish the semester with a pair of road games next weekend.

Friday night they travel to the Ice Hutch in Pelham, NY to face Fordham at

10:15 PM Followed by a trip to the Lehigh Valley Ice Arena in PA to play DeSales University.
