HAVERFORD, PA -- The New Jersey Institute of Technology men's and women's fencing teams competed at the Haverford Invitational in its 2008-09 season opener Sunday afternoon.
The NJIT men's fencing team was victorious against Virginia Tech (19-8) and University of Virginia (18-9) but fell against Johns Hopkins (5-22), North Carolina (3-24), Haverford (3-24) and William & Mary (10-17).
Freshman Tony Sorgi making his first collegiate appearance went 13-5 on the day competing on the foil strip. Sorgi was 3-0 against Virginia Tech and University of Virginia.
Captain Zachary Hvizdak combined for a 7-11 record on the day at epee. Hvizdak went 3-0 against Virginia Tech and 2-1 against William and Mary.
Sophomore Andrew Kirk finished the day 8-10 with three wins against Virginia Tech and two against University of Virginia in the epee contests.
On the women's side, first time fencer Sherry Edwards combined for a 5-10 record at epee. Edwards was 2-1 vs. Virginia Tech and picked up one win against North Carolina and host Haverford.
The women's fencing team returns to action on December 4 when they host Queens (NY) at 6pm at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
The men's fencing team returns to action on January 11 when they compete at the Penn Invitational.
