Women's Swimming Comes Up Short at VMI

Captain Teresa Higgins

LEXINGTON, VA -- The NJIT women's swimming team came up on the short end of a 52-51 decision against VMI.  Despite winning a number of events, the Highlanders were unable to hold on to a lead they had built, with the Keydets storming back in the last four events to earn the one point win.

The meet was held in the double dual format, featuring Mount Saint Mary's of Maryland along with VMI and NJIT.  In the double dual format each race is scored independently between each pair of schools.  NJIT also lost to Mount Saint Mary's 66-31.

In the competition against VMI, junior captain Teresa Higgins picked up three wins in the 50 yard freestyle, the 500 yard freestyle and the 1000 freestyle where she recorded her lifetime best.  Sophomore Karen Cilento found the wall first in the 50 and 100 yard breaststrokes and the 100 freestyle.

In the backstroke events, sophomore Sadie Mele also made it a sweep of the 50 and 100 yard distances.  Switching over to the butterfly, she added valuable second place points in the 50 yard event.  Senior Ashley Craig competed in the 50 and 100 yard freestyles and added a third place point in the 50 yard backstroke.

“Both squads were small so the meet came down to the stratagy of picking the right events to swim to win the most points.  We had a our best line but unfortunately, VMI was able to swim around us and gain the points they needed for the win.”  Head Coach Eric Rasmussen

The Highlanders return to action on December 2nd when they travel to William Patterson University.
