Box Score

LEWISBURG
, PA
Bucknell sophomore Tommy McCabe scored once in each half, pacing the Bison to a 3-0 men's soccer win over visiting NJIT Wednesday night.

The non-conference game was played on a cold, breezy night a day after heavy rain and wind had postponed it from its originally scheduled date.

McCabe, who recently moved from defender to left halfback, celebrated his move to the more advanced position in the offense to notch his first two college goals in the game against the Highlanders.

McCabe registered the only goal of the first half, connecting after a pass from Luke Joyner and giving his team a 1-0 lead at 29:03.

Bucknell stayed on top by the slimmest of margins until the last 15 minutes of the game, when the Bison got their first insurance goal in the 76th minute. McCabe picked up his second goal, putting away a deflection of a shot by teammate Anthony Ferraro that came loose after it hit an NJIT defender.

Alex Russo rounded out the scoring with 5:06 left, heading in Matt Hittson's free kick out of midfield and lifting Bucknell to a 3-0 lead.

Will Byrne made two saves to notch the shutout in goal for the Bison, while NJIT goalkeeper Ryan Sutherland saved six Bucknell shots on goal.

Bucknell outshot NJIT, 23-16 overall and 9-2 in shots on goal, as senior Eddie Romero accounted for both shots on goal by the Highlanders. The Bison also had a 7-2 corner kick advantage.

The Highlanders, who came in having won back-to-back matches at home with a come-from-behind 2-1 win last week over Rutgers and a 4-0 win last weekend against Howard, were unfortunate not to score first against Bucknell.

A foul by Bucknell's Hittson gave a free kick to NJIT's Gustav Warfving, who took a strong shot from 25 yards out. The free kick swerved around the Bucknell wall, but barely missed the lower right corner.

NJIT will play its final regular season game on Tuesday, November 4, when the Highlanders host Lafayette in a 7 pm start on Lubetkin Field. That final home game of 2008 will feature halftime ceremonies honoring NJIT's nine departing seniors.
