Women’s Swimming Opens up at Home vs. Manhattan

NEWARK
, NJ -- The NJIT women's swimming team opened its home schedule by hosting Manhattan Sunday afternoon in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.

 

Freshman Rachael Abadie, making her season debut in the pool for the Highlanders picked up a first place finish in the 100 yard fly with a time of 1:01.67 setting a new school-record.  She surpasses Ana Ossa's old mark which was set on February 4, 2005.  Ossa's time was 1:03.71.

 

Junior Teresa Higgins picked up a second-place finish in the 500 yard freestyle.  Higgins, swimming head to head with Manhattan's O'Leary throughout most of the race finished 3/100s of a second ahead of O'Leary with a time of 6:26.49.  Manhattan's O'Leary finished 6:26.52.

 

Also representing NJIT on Sunday was – Ashley Craig who was part of the 200 yard relay and swam in the 50 yard freestyle; Kellie Garrigan made her collegiate debut in the 200 yard freestyle and 100 yard freestyle while sophomore Karen Cilento placed third in the 100 yard backstroke and was part of both Highlander relay teams.

 

Visiting Manhattan won the meet 63-53.

 

The Highlanders are back in the pool on Friday, November 7 when they travel to Staten Island, NY to take on Wagner.  The meet is scheduled to start at 6pm.
