Jason Munsch enters his sixth season as Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach at NJIT in 2026-27.
In year five under Munsch, the Highlanders reached a historic milestone during the 2026 outdoor season as three student-athletes qualified for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships East First Round by finishing among the top 48 performers in the NCAA East Region in their respective events. It marked the first time in program history that NJIT sent three athletes to the NCAA East First Round, as well as the first time a Highlander female athlete and a Highlander thrower qualified for the regional championship meet.
Munsch joined NJIT in August 2021 after nearly two decades of coaching and training experience spanning the high school and collegiate ranks. He was hired by Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Lenny Kaplan and succeeded Al Alonso, who stepped down after 18 years leading the program. Upon his hiring, Kaplan cited Munsch's experience and vision for the future of NJIT's men's and women's cross country and track & field programs as key factors in his selection.
Prior to arriving at NJIT, Munsch served as a part-time assistant coach at Gill St. Bernard's School during the 2021 outdoor season. He has also served as head trainer for Golden Fleece Training, an organization he founded in 2018 that works with high school and collegiate track & field athletes and football players.
Before founding Golden Fleece Training, Munsch was an assistant coach at Manalapan High School from 2017-18, helping guide the boys' 4x100-meter relay team to a meet-record victory in the Emerging Elite National Championship at the 2018 New Balance Outdoor Nationals.
Munsch previously served as Head Men's and Women's Coach at Florida Institute of Technology from 2015-17. During his tenure, Florida Tech student-athletes produced 22 combined school records, two All-Americans, nine Peach Belt Conference Championships, 16 USTFCCCA All-Region selections, five individual and four team USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, 30 Peach Belt Conference All-Academic selections, and the 2017 USTFCCCA Division II South Region Field Event Athlete of the Year.
Prior to Florida Tech, Munsch was the head coach at Riverview (FL) High School from 2010-15. Earlier in his career, he held collegiate assistant coaching positions at the College of Charleston (2006-07), the University of Central Missouri (2004-06, graduate assistant), and Bowling Green (2003-04).
A 2003 graduate of the University of Toledo, Munsch earned a bachelor's degree in Physical Education while competing as a four-year member of the track and field program. He later earned a master's degree in Physical Education from the University of Central Missouri in 2006.
Munsch also holds multiple coaching certifications from USA Track & Field, including Level 1, Level 2 Sprints/Hurdles/Relays, and Level 2 Jumps certifications.
