Bobby Russo joins the Highlander staff after a highly decorated playing career at Rutgers and various professional experiences in and out of coaching.
The Bridgewater native played in 58 contests (46 starts) for the Scarlet Knights over five seasons, accounting for 107 ground balls, 42 caused turnovers, seven assists and five goals. As a senior in 2023, Russo was named a team captain, was selected to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Senior All-Star Game, and was named a USILA Scholar All-American.
In addition to those senior year laurels, Russo was frequently recognized for his academic efforts, athletic prowess and overall character. During his career, Russo was named a Big Ten Preseason Player to Watch (2022), twice earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week awards (once each in 2022 and 2021), was a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar (2021, 2020), four-time Academic All-Big Ten (2020-23), was inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma national collegiate honor society, served as a member of the Rutgers Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), and earned a 2022 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award and the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award.
Among his accolades in high school at Bridgewater-Raritan, Russo was a US Lacrosse All-American, Under Armour underclassman All-Academic, Academic All-American, All-State selection, multi-time All-Group and All-Conference honoree, National Honor Society member and multi-sport athlete (basketball).
Russo cut his teeth in coaching on the youth level, serving as a coach for 2 Knights Lacrosse in Bridgewater from 2018-22. His responsibilities included supervising and coaching boys aged 5-18 in defensive skills and player development, practice planning and staff organization, and coaching the program's high school and middle school teams in national tournaments and showcases.
Russo earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from Rutgers in January 2022 and a Master of Science degree in Supply Chain Management from Rutgers in May 2023. He has put his marketing interest and knowledge to use as a Marketing Coordinator at Electric Symphony Media in Hoboken (2022) and an Marketing Analytics Intern at Uplift Food in New York (2021-22). Russo has also spent time as a Volunteer Fundraiser for the HEADstrong Foundation in Ridley, Pa. (2020-22) and a Volunteer at Elijah's Promise in New Brunswick (2022).
