Dr. Roy H. Cornely
Roy Cornely, a distinguished scientist and teacher, joined the NJIT faculty in 1971 and is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
He is honored as the recipient of the Robert Swanson Award primarily for both his service from 1993 to 2008 as NJIT’s Faculty Athletics Representative, a vital position in each member institution’s relationship with the NCAA, and for his tireless personal support of NJIT’s teams and its individual student-athletes.
In his role as FAR, Dr. Cornely had an integral role in the evolution of NJIT’s program from its days as a member of NCAA Division III to its transition to Division II in 1997-98 and then to the ongoing reclassification to Division I. Going beyond his formal role, Roy attends numerous NJIT contests, regardless of sport, location, time of day or day of the week.
He received his B.S., M.S. and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from Drexel University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Rutgers University (72). As a Drexel Coop engineer he worked on the digital circuits for the first commercial computers and later joined “RCA Labs” in 1961 as a member of the technical staff, working in frontier areas of computer hardware development. He continues to initiate, conduct and guide research in his fields of expertise and has more than three dozen technical research publications and multiple patents.
Professor Cornely has maintained a strong interest in designing and teaching courses in the areas of electronics and computer hardware and he has won many departmental and institutional awards for his teaching excellence. He has further designed a hands-on curriculum to introduce pre-college students to robotics, computers and electronics.
He has served the University on numerous councils, committees and advisory boards, and he serves the technical community as a member of IEEE and the American Vacuum Society and has been a reviewer for the NSF and of publications related to his fields of expertise.
