NEWARK, NJ — The NJIT women's volleyball team dropped their final non-conference match of the season to Saint Peter's in four sets on Friday night inside the Joel & Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center.
Saint Peter's took the opening set, 25-20, but NJIT answered with a strong second set. The Highlanders recorded 16 kills while hitting .333 and used a balanced offensive attack to take the frame, 25-17, evening the match at 1-1.
The Peacocks regained the lead in the third set, taking a 25-21 victory. NJIT recorded 15 kills in the frame and stayed within reach throughout the set, but Saint Peter's closed out the frame late.
NJIT continued to battle in the fourth set, recording 15 kills and hitting .200. The Highlanders remained within striking distance, but Saint Peter's finished with a 25-19 victory to take the match.
Junior Aries Fontaine led the Highlanders with 16 kills while hitting .270 and added four block assists. Freshman Kayden Campbell recorded 11 kills while hitting .321, while junior Ema Torres added 10 kills and hit .450 in three sets.
Freshamn duo of Joaneliz Maisonet and Maria Kurnatowska each contributed seven kills. Maisonet also recorded 11 digs, while Kurnatowska added two block assists.
At setter, sophomore Madison MacKaig led NJIT with 23 assists and added 11 digs. Junior Cece Marino contributed 15 assists and 10 digs, while freshman Mya Lei-Butters paced the Highlanders with 19 digs.
