Men’s Soccer Battles for 90 Minutes to Split the Points with No. 12 Vermont


BURLINGTON, VT — NJIT played No. 12 Vermont to a 1-1 draw on Saturday at Virtue Field in America East Conference men's soccer action. 

NJIT is 5-4-2 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play, remaining undefeated in the last four straight matches. Vermont, ranked No. 12 moved to 7-1-3 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play.

The Highlanders created the first chances, with Riley Davis missing top right at 3:15 before Diogo Rebelo scored at 4:58 off assists from Jake Rubis and Jeremy Klinger to put NJIT ahead 1-0.   Rebelo leads the league with five goals.

NJIT continued to generate pressure through the middle of the half, including Diogo Rebelo's shot wide at 12:53 and a four-corner stretch from 20:49 to 25:13 that featured two Zain Thompson shots and a Junee Lee attempt wide left. 

Vermont recorded four shots from 37:00 to 41:39, including Mark Isong hitting the top woodwork at 40:21, but NJIT kept Vermont off the board and reached halftime ahead 1-0.

The Catamounts pushed early in the second half, sending a Luis Vetter shot wide at 47:38 before Philipp Schmidtke scored from David Ismail and Ezra Widman at 59:45 to tie the match at 1-1. 

NJIT's best chance to move back in front came at 69:08, when Zain Thompson hit the top woodwork, and Andre Faerman followed with a save on Vetter at 70:57. 

Vermont generated the late pressure with a corner and multiple shots between 77:46 and 87:11, but Faerman saved an Ismail attempt at 85:08 and NJIT got through the stretch as the match finished 1-1.

Diogo Rebelo scored NJIT's goal, putting one of his two shots on goal and finishing with two points. Jeremy Klinger recorded an assist for one point. Jake Rubis also tallied an assist for one point. Andre Faerman played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves. 

NJIT picked up one point against No. 12 Vermont.

Vermont finished with a 14-7 shot advantage, including 10-1 after halftime, while NJIT made both of its saves in the second half.

NJIT will host New Hampshire on Saturday, October 10, at 7 p.m. at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium in Newark.
