NEWARK, NJ–Senior Sergio Martinez Cubel's goal in the first half led the NJIT men's soccer team to its first win of the 2025 season with a 1-0 victory over visiting Rider in men's soccer non-conference action inside Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
NJIT recorded its second clean sheet of the season, improving to 1-2-1 on the young season while Rider moved to 1-3-1 overall.
Senior goalkeeper Devin Armstrong registered his second consecutive shutout of the season, stopping three Bronc shots while in a 0-0 tie against UConn in the Highlanders home opener, the Highlander keeper combined for four saves.
NJIT scored its lone goal of the match on a ninth minute tally on a goal by Martinez Cubel. Martinez Cubel's initial shot was saved by Rider keeper but Martinez Cubel's second shot on target was deflected off a Broncs' defender and found the back of the net for his first goal of the season. The goal was the seventh career tally for the midfielder from Sedavi, Spain.
Armstrong made two early back-to-back saves in the sixth minute on a pair of shots by Rider.
In the 62nd minute, an opportunity for Rider to score the equalizer off a shot by Xavi Csato from about 15 yards hit the top of the crossbar.
NJIT held a slight advantage in overall shots 12-to-11 and shots on goal (5-to-3). Martinez Cubel led the match with five overall shots while Kyle Dixon and Diogo Rebelo each combined for three shots in the win.

NJIT will be back in action next week, Tuesday, September 9 when the Highlanders welcome La Salle at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium. The game will be broadcasted on America East TV.
