​NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT men's soccer team begins a stretch of four straight in Newark with the home opener set against UConn on Thursday night at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

Game Information
Thursday's match is slated for 7pm. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+ with in-game statistics available on NJITHighlanders.com.

All-Time Series
The Highlanders will face UConn for the third time in program history. The Huskies lead the all-time series, 2-0.

Last Time Out
FDU scored a late goal in the 88th minute to top visiting NJIT, 1-0, men's soccer non-conference action inside University Stadium.  With the match scoreless over 85 minutes, the Knights capitalized in the 88th minute on a goal by David Ivascu off a back foot pass from Arnau Rabassa Guillamon to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

News & Notes
–NJIT is in search of its first win of the season dropping its first two games – at Loyola (MD) and at FDU
–Head coach Fernando Barboto begins his 10th season at NJIT after guiding the 2024 Highlanders to its fifth straight America East Tournament appearance.
–The Highlanders have welcomed 10 newcomers to the 2025 roster.
–America East All-Championship team selection Sergio Martinez Cubel returns as the Highlanders top goal scorer. Three out of four goals in 2024 came on penalty kicks, all three being successful.
Devin Armstrong, the Highlander keeper, played and started in 17 matches last season after transferring in from Wake Forest (2022-23) and Akron (January 2024), combining for a 6-7-4 overall mark, 60 saves, a 1.51 goals against average and a pair of shutouts.  He posted a personal-best nine saves at Vermont.  Armstrong ranked fourth in the league in saves per game (3.53).
Alvaro Heredia combined for a pair of goals and assists for six points.
–NJIT was voted to finish fifth in the 2025 America East Preseason Coaches Poll.

Scouting the Huskies
–UConn enters Thursday's contest with a 1-0-1 overall record
–The Huskies opened the season with a 1-0 victory over Syracuse and followed up with a 1-1 draw against No. 8 UMass.
–Balthazar Saunders and Austin Brummett each have one goal in the young season
–Goalkeeper Kyle Durham is 1-0-1 on the season with two starts and a total of eight saves, including one shutout.
–UConn has been projected to finish fourth in the East Division of the BIG EAST Conference.
–Last season, UConn went 3-2-3 in BIG EAST play, going 8-4-6 overall, earning the program's second straight BIG EAST Tournament appearance under fourth year head coach Chris Gbandi.
–The Huskies return key contributors from a season ago, including three of their top five point leaders, in Sabri Hanni, Charlie Holmes, and Marco Valentic.

Up Next
The Highlanders will break for nine days and return to action at home on September 6, hosting Rider at 6pm.  The game will be broadcasted on America East TV.
