Six Straight for the Highlanders; NJIT Sweeps Harvard in Home EIVA Action


​NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT men's volleyball team won its sixth straight win of the season, defeating visiting Harvard, 3-0, in EIVA Conference action inside the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center.

NJIT, winners of six in a row, hit an impressive .373 for the match, moving above .500 and standing at 13-12 overall, 7-4 in the league.

The Highlanders swept the Crimson – 25-23, 25-20 and 25-16.

Leading the way for the Highlanders were seniors Josh Gregg (13 kills) and Alessandro Negri (10 kills).  Gregg finished with a .435 hitting percentage on 23 attempts with just three errors to go along with four block assists and three digs.  Negri hit .333 on 24 swings and two errors, combining for four total blocks (two solo, two assists) and five digs.  

Antonio Feliciano added six kills, five digs and two service aces in the win.  Freshman Bruno Figueiredo added 28 assists.  Andrew Fedmasu posted three kills on four attempts while hitting .500 for the match.  He added three block assists.  Libero Diego Lopez notched five digs.

The first set saw neither team lead by more than four, 11-8 in favor of the home team.  Harvard scored four straight points to take a 12-11 lead.  With the Highlanders ahead 16-15, the Crimson went on a 6-0 run to take a 21-16 advantage.  NJIT responded with a 9-2 run to go ahead by one, 25-22, capped by a block assist by Andrew Fedmasu and Josh Gregg.

NJIT continued to stay in control to begin the second frame, jumping out to a 6-2 run.  The Crimson inched their way back into the frame, cutting the Highlanders deficit to three, 13-10, and the Highlanders scored three straight points in the mid-teens for an 18-13 lead, resulting in an Harvard timeout.  A 4-1 run by the visitors closed the Highlander gap to two, 20-18, but a 5-2 run to close out the frame put the Highlanders ahead 2-0 with a 25-20 victory.

The momentum continued into the third set as the Highlanders started off the frame on a 7-3 run and extended its run to 11-4 after a successful challenge by 11th year head coach Danny Goncalves.   NJIT remained hot in the teens, taking a seven-point lead, 17-10, behind a short 3-1 run and increased its lead to as many as 10, 20-11.  NJIT scored the final two points of the season to secure the 3-0 home sweep over Harvard with a 25-16 victory. 

Next Up
NJIT will conclude the regular season finale at home on Saturday at 7pm against Harvard.  Saturday will mark Senior Night for six graduating Highlander seniors – Alessandro Negri, Antonio Feliciano, Gil Zyndorf, Braeden Goebbert, Christian Trevino and Josh Gregg.
