NEWARK, NJ–No. 16 Ohio State earned the weekend sweep, registering a 3-0 win over NJIT Saturday evening inside the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center.
Ohio State, which improves to 9-8 on the season, won in straight sets Saturday evening – 26-24, 25-17 and 25-20. NJIT moves to 7-8 on the season.
The Highlanders had two players – Antonio Feliciano and Wiktor Nowak each combined for seven kills followed by Andrew Fedmasu with six kills. Fedmasu finished the match with a .417 hitting percentage on 12 swings and just one error. Bruno Figueiredo piled up 25 assists and eight digs. In front of the net, Braeden Goebbert led NJIT with three block assists.
NJIT took control of the first set early, jumping out to a 7-1 lead, resulting in an Ohio State timeout. Visiting Ohio State worked its way back into the set, cutting the deficit to one, 14-13, and the home team went on a 4-1 spurt to take a four-point lead, 18-14, resulting in the Buckeyes second timeout of the set. Ohio State scored four straight points to knot the set at 18-all. A 5-2 run by Ohio State late in the set put the Buckeyes ahead by two, 23-21 but the Highlanders responded with a 3-1 spurt to knot the set at 24-all on a kill by Wiktor Nowak. The Buckeyes scored the final two points of the set for a 26-24 win.
Ohio State got off to a quick start in the second set, 7-3 but the Highlanders responded with six consecutive points to take a two-point lead, 10-8, on a kill by Antonio Feliciano. The Buckeyes rallied and went on a 8-1 spurt to regain the lead and go ahead by five, 18-13. The Highlanders went on a short 3-1 run to slim the Ohio State lead to four, 21-17 but the Buckeyes scored the final four points of the match to pick up the 25-17 to go ahead 2-0.
In the third frame, Ohio State took control right out of the gates, 11-4 and extended its lead to 14-7. NJIT used a late run, pulling within four, 17-13, behind three straight points and then again in the late teens, going on a 4-1 spurt to pull within four, 24-20 but the Buckeyes secured the final points to secure the 3-0 sweep with a 25-20 victory.
The Buckeyes were led by Kyle Teune with a match-best 12 kills while Teune and Shane Wetzel each added seven digs.
NJIT will begin a stretch of four games on the road, first visiting St. Thomas Aquinas on March 11 at 5pm.
