Women’s Basketball Plays Three Straight at Home

NJIT vs. Maine (Feb. 6 @ 6pm); NJIT vs. UNH (Feb. 8 @ 6pm)

NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT women's basketball team will play the next three games at home, first welcoming Maine and New Hampshire this week to Newark.

Game Information 
Feb. 6 vs. Maine…The game vs. Maine on Thursday, February 6 is slated to tip off at 6pm inside the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center on ESPN+.  Thursday will be NJIT's Play4Kay Game.  Maine won the last meeting on January 16, 71-58.  The Black Bears own an 8-4 all-time record vs. the Highlanders.  Prior to NJIT joining the America East, the two teams met in 2009, a contest won by NJIT in Newark by a score of 63-50. The first-ever meeting came in 2008 where the Black Bears were defeated on their home court, 68-60.

Feb. 8 vs. New Hampshire .. The game vs. New Hampshire on Saturday, February 8 is slated to tip off at 6pm inside the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center on ESPN+.  Saturday will be NJIT's Alumnae Day and Amber Morgan Memorial Game.  The Wildcats won the last meeting on January 18, 70-48.  New Hampshire holds a 7-5 all-time record over NJIT.

7X America East Rookie of the Week Olivia Kulyk 
Olivia Kulyk has been named America East Rookie of the Week seven times and Player of the Week one time this season.

Kulyk ranks 13th in the conference in scoring, first in three-point field goals made and in three-point field goal percentage. She also ranks 16th in the conference in rebounding. 

1,000 Career Points and Counting
Rising junior Alejandra Zuniga became the 13th Highlander to score 1,000 career points after a tough driving right-handed layup with 2:38 left in the game against Monmouth on December 9, 2024.  Zuniga, who cracked the top-10 all-time stands at 1,164 points, which ranks eighth all-time in program history.  With two points scored on Thursday, Zuniga will move into seventh all-time.

Highlander Highlights 

  • NJIT, which started off the America East schedule 3-0, the best start since the 2021-22 season, has dropped its last four games (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and most recently first-place UAlbany).

  • Alejandra Zuniga is averaging 16.6ppg and 2.8rpg while shooting 44.3% from the field.  She has scored 20+ points or more in 10 games this season, including a season-best 26 at Rutgers.  Zuniga ranks third in the conference in scoring and sixth in assists.

  • Freshman Olivia Kulyk has been named America East Rookie of the Week seven times and Player of the Week once this season. She is averaging 10.3ppg and 4.7rpg. In the America East, Kulyk ranks in the top 15 in scoring, tops the league in three-point three-point field goals made (2.0) and in three-point field goal percentage (39.2)

  • As a team, NJIT ranks second in the America East in scoring (65.0 ppg), blocked shots (4.36 bpg) and second in three-point field goals made (7.5 pg).

  • NJIT is coming off a 1-1 week which snapped a four-game skid for the Highlanders with a win at UMass Lowell on January 30, sweeping the regular season series.

  • The Highlanders four-game win streak was snapped at Maine on January 16.  NJIT had won four in a row (at LIU, 12/30/24), (vs. Binghamton, 1/2/25) on the road at UMBC (1/9/25) and at home against (UMass Lowell; 1/11/25).   The last time NJIT won four straight dates back to 2021-22 when the Highlanders won a stretch of five straight.  NJIT had started 3-0 in America East action for the first time since the 2021-22 season.

  • The Highlanders closed out 2024 with a win over LIU, 89-60, led by five players reaching double-figures.

  • NJIT concluded its non-conference slate 3-10, dropping six games by five or less points this season, including a one-point overtime loss Hostra (L, 69-74), Army West Point (L, 68-69 (OT)), Lafayette (L, 69-71), Saint Peter's (L, 60-65), Coppin State (L, 61-63) and Wagner (W, 62-60).

  • The Highlanders secured its first win of the season at Saint Francis U, an 80-60 road victory.  The 80 points are the most scored by the Highlanders this season.

  • Head Coach Mike Lane is in his seventh season at the helm of the Highlanders.  NJIT went 12-18 overall, 4-12 in the America East and advanced to the America East Postseason Tournament for the fourth straight time.

Scouting Maine 

  • Maine currently holds the conference's longest active win streak at five with a most recent victory over Vermont to move the Black Bears into second in the America East standings.

  • The Black Bears enter Thursday's contest with a 12-10 overall record and 7-2 in the league and winners of their last five in a row

  • Caroline Dotsey is averaging 17.6 points per game, including a career-high 30 point outing at New Hampshire, with double-figures in four of her last five. Caroline Bornemann, who leads Maine in overall scoring (12.1) and rebounding (8.0), is averaging 14.4 points and 9.0 rebounds during the win streak 

  • Bornemann ranks second in the league in rebounding (8.0) and sixth in scoring (12.1). 

Scouting New Hampshire

  • New Hampshire will visit UMBC on Thursday before NJIT hosts the Wildcats on Saturday at 6pm.

  • The Wildcats have lost their last three contests (prior to winning three straight at home over UMBC and NJIT).

  • New Hampshire is 8-14 overall, 2-7 in the America East

  • Eva DeChent tops the America East in scoring, averaging 17.7ppg.  She has combined for three 20+ point contests in the last five games, including a pair of 29+ performances against Maine most recently and NJIT.

  • Clara Gomez is fourth in the conference in rebounding (7.2)

NJIT will be back in action on Saturday when the Highlanders host New Hampshire at 6pm.  Saturday will mark Alumnae Day/Amber Morgan Memorial Game.
