NEWARK, NJ–Visiting Princeton topped No. 19 NJIT, 3-1, Friday evening in EIVA men's volleyball action inside the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center.
With the win, Princeton improves to an even 4-4 on the season and 1-0 in the EIVA while the Highlanders move to 6-3 overall, 1-1 in the league.
Princeton set the tone, taking the first set 25-15 but NJIT bounced back and evened the score at 1-1 in the second frame with a 25-21 victory. The Tigers won the third set in extra points 26-24 and secured its first EIVA Conference win of the season with a 25-20 victory in the fourth frame for a 3-1 win.
NJIT was led by Braeden Goebbert and Andrew Fedmasu each notching 10 kills followed by Alesandro Negri (9) and Antonio Feliciano (7). Goebbert finished the match with a .625 hitting percentage on 16 swings and no errors while Fedmasu combined for a .474 hitting percentage to go along with five total blocks (two solo, three assists).
Setter Bruno Figueiredo combined for 34 assists and five digs. Libero Diego Lopez recorded seven digs on the night.
In the first frame, Princeton hit an impressive .571 for the set, taking control midway though the set in the mid-teens with a 16-9 lead behind a 5-1 run resulting in an NJIT timeout. NJIT responded, going on a 6-2 run to pull within three, 18-15, resulting in a Princeton timeout. The Tigers scored the final seven points of the set to take a 25-15 victory over NJIT.
NJIT hit .500 in the second set and took control of the set 17-13 after a 7-2 spurt by the home team, resulting in a Princeton timeout. NJIT continued to use their momentum in the set to take a four-point advantage, 22-18, after a pair of kills by the Highlanders. NJIT scored the last two out of three points to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-21 victory.
The Tigers took an early 10-6 lead in the third frame but the Highlanders rallied back to tie the score at 13-all, using a 5-1 spurt. Princeton went on a run of their own, 5-2, including three straight points for an 18-15 lead, resulting in an NJIT timeout. A 5-1 run by the home team put the Highlanders ahead by one, 20-19, on an ace by Andrew Fedmasu. The set saw five more ties the final at 24-all as the Tigers scored the final three points of the set to go ahead 2-1 with a 26-24 victory.
Neither team led by more than one point in the fourth set until 13-12 in favor of NJIT, Princeton scored five straight points for a 17-13 advantage. NJIT cut the Tiger deficit to two late in the set, the final at 22-20 on a kill by Negri but Princeton scored three consecutive points to close out the match with a 25-20 win to secure the 3-1 decision over the Highlanders.
