Women’s Basketball Hits the Road for Pair of America East Conference Games

NJIT at UML (Jan. 31 at 11am); NJIT at Bryant (Feb. 1 at 2pm)

NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT women's basketball team will hit the road for a pair of America East Conference games this week.

Game Information 
At UML … The game at UMass Lowell will tip off at 11am on January 30 as part of a Field Day game for the RiverHawks inside Tsongas Center.  The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with in-game statistics available on GoRiverHawks.com. 

At Bryant….The game at Bryant will tip off at 2pm on February 1 inside the Chace Athletic Center.  The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with in-game statistics available on BryantBulldogs.com 

All-Time Series 
Vs. UML … NJIT leads the all-time series, 8-5.  NJIT has won the last seven out of eight meetings including the first meeting of the 2025 season on January 11, 2025, 72-54, in Newark.

Vs. Bryant … Bryant leads the all-time series 5-2.  NJIT won the last meeting, 64-38, in Newark on March 2, 2024.

1,000 Career Points and Counting
Rising junior Alejandra Zuniga became the 13th Highlander to score 1,000 career points after a tough driving right-handed layup with 2:38 left in the game against Monmouth on December 9, 2024.  Zuniga, who cracked the top-10 all-time stands at 1,133 points, which ranks eighth all-time in program history.

Highlander Highlights 

  • NJIT, which started off the America East schedule 3-0, the best start since the 2021-22 season, has dropped its last four games (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and most recently first-place UAlbany).

  • Alejandra Zuniga is averaging 16.8ppg and 2.8rpg while shooting 45.7% from the field.  She has scored 20+ points or more in nine games this season, including a season-best 26 at Rutgers.  Zuniga ranks third in the conference in scoring and sixth in assists.

  • Freshman Olivia Kulyk has been named America East Rookie of the Week six times and Player of the Week once this season. She is averaging 10.6ppg and 4.6rpg. In the America East, Kulyk ranks in the top 15 in scoring, tops the league in three-point three-point field goals made (2.1) and second  in three-point field goal percentage (40.9)

  • As a team, NJIT ranks second in the America East in scoring (65.6 ppg), blocked shots (4.20 bpg) and second in three-point field goals made (7.6 pg).

  • The Highlanders four-game win streak was snapped at Maine on January 16.  NJIT had won four in a row (at LIU, 12/30/24), (vs. Binghamton, 1/2/25) on the road at UMBC (1/9/25) and at home against (UMass Lowell; 1/11/25).   The last time NJIT won four straight dates back to 2021-22 when the Highlanders won a stretch of five straight.  NJIT had started 3-0 in America East action for the first time since the 2021-22 season.

  • The Highlanders closed out 2024 with a win over LIU, 89-60, led by five players reaching double-figures.

  • NJIT concluded its non-conference slate 3-10, dropping six games by five or less points this season, including a one-point overtime loss Hostra (L, 69-74), Army West Point (L, 68-69 (OT)), Lafayette (L, 69-71), Saint Peter's (L, 60-65), Coppin State (L, 61-63) and Wagner (W, 62-60).

  • The Highlanders secured its first win of the season at Saint Francis U, an 80-60 road victory.  The 80 points are the most scored by the Highlanders this season.

  • Head Coach Mike Lane is in his seventh season at the helm of the Highlanders.  NJIT went 12-18 overall, 4-12 in the America East and advanced to the America East Postseason Tournament for the fourth straight time.

Scouting UMass Lowell
UMass Lowell (3-16, 1-6 AE) is coming off its first win in the America East, a 56-54 victory over New Hampshire, snapping an eight-game skid.

Alex Gitchenko hit the game-winner with twenty seconds left in the game, breaking a 54-54 tie and giving the River Hawks its first win in the league, 56-54, over the Wildcats.

UMass Lowell is led by one double-figure scorer – Abbey Lindsay (10.8ppg) while Maddie Rice paces the team on the boards (6.4rpg).

Scouting Bryant
Bryant, winners of three in a row, are coming off a 68-54 victory over UMBC and are led by three double-figure scorers – Ali Brigham (11.3ppg), Breezie Williams (11.0ppg) and Mia Mancini (10.4ppg).

Nia Scott who leads the America East in rebounding, is averaging 8.8rpg and is shooting 53.4 percent from the field.

America East Need to Know Notes 

  • The Great Danes are ranked 22nd in the College Insider Women's Mid-Major Top 25.

  • Kayla Cooper was named to the 15-player mid-season watch list for the Her Hoops Stats Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year. She currently ranks 19th nationally in field goals made.

  • Vermont has won six-straight games after dropping four in a row.

  • Maine's Olivia Rockwood was named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) 'So You Want To Be A Coach' program.

  • UMass Lowell's Sydney Watkins ranks 12th nationally averaging 3.1 steals per game.

  • Eva DeChent of New Hampshire ranks 20th nationally in free throws made .

NJIT will return back to Newark for a pair of games inside the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center on February 6 at 6pm vs. New Hampshire (Play4Kay) and February 8 vs. New Hampshire at 6pm (Amber Morgan Memorial Game/Alumnae Day).
