Highlanders Fall in America East Opener Saturday Night

NEWARK, NJ–Bryant registered a 3-0 road victory at NJIT Saturday evening in the America East Conference opener inside Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

Bryant, the defending America East Conference champions won its second straight match, improving to 6-2-1, 1-0-0 in the America East while NJIT moved to 3-5-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the conference.

The Bulldogs scored a goal late in the first half and two goals in the second half led by Cristian Guirado who tallied a pair of goals in the win while goalkeeper Antreas Hadjigavriel recorded the clean sheet with two saves.

How It Happened

  • In the 36th minute, Devin Armstrong denied the Bulldogs from their first scoring opportunity with a diving save.

  • Bryant struck first in the 40th minute on a long-range blast by Cristian Guirado to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.  Highlander keeper Armstrong nearly stopped the ball with a one-legged save. 

  • NJIT had a chance in the 42nd minute off a serve by Sokol Ymeraj to the back of the net finding Karmel Segui on the tough angle, hitting the outside of the post.

  • After the first 45 minutes, Bryant out shot NJIT, 9-3.  Three Highlanders were credited with one shot – Jack Krongold, Segiu and Asembo Augo.

  • Two minutes into the second half, Armstrong made two impressive saves on a pair of shots by the Bulldogs.

  • Bryant took control in the 55th minute after a goal by Jose Alves Faria to go ahead 2-0.

  • Another impressive diving save by Armstrong on a shot by Alves Faria which skipped along the wet turf in the 62nd minute.

  • Guirado netted his second goal of the match in the 89th minute, cruising to a 3-0 America East victory.

  • The overall shots were in favor of the Bulldogs 20-7 (8-to-3 SOG)

  • Augo and Giovanni Massacesi each recorded two shots apiece for NJIT

Next Up
NJIT, in a stretch of a three-game home-stand, will host Delaware in a non-conference match up on October 1 at 7pm.
