Men’s Soccer Topped on the Road at Siena

LOUDONVILLE, NY–Siena topped visiting NJIT, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action at Hickey Field.

Siena improved to 2-3-3 overall while NJIT moved to 3-4-1.

The Saints netted a pair of goals in the first 45 minutes and added a third goal late in the second, cruising to a 3-0 home victory.

How It Happened

  • NJIT's Devin Armstrong got up and punched the ball out over the crossbar in the 18th minute a blast down the center by Mark Cajamaraca, resulting in a corner kick.

  • Siena grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute as Cole Hellert got inside the box and struck the ball with his left-foot past a diving Armstrong into the lower right corner to take the lead.

  • The Saints went ahead 2-0 in the 36th minute on a penalty kick by Olafur Freysson after a Siena player was pulled down inside the box by a Highlander defender.  The play resulted in a red card and the Highlanders would play down a man for the remainder of the match.

  • The Highlanders registered three shots after the first 45 minutes – Goncalo Franco, Asembo Augo, Karmel Segui.

  • The best opportunity for NJIT came in the 57th minute on a free kick by Sokol Ymeraj, whose shot hit off the top of the crossbar.

  • A minute later three straight Highlanders had a chance to tally a goal – Asembo Augo, Andrew Araya and Giovanni Massacessi, each shot staying wide.

  • The Highlanders continued to apply pressure with Asembo Augo's point blank shot from endline, stopped by Siena's keeper to the lower left.

  • Siena added another goal in the 71st minute to increase its lead to 3-0 on a goal by Mario Navarro Perez, striking across the goalkeeper and finishing on the right far post.

  • The home team held a slight edge in overall shots 14-to-13.

  • NJIT's Augo led the match with six total shots while Ymeraj added a pair of shots.

 

Next Up
NJIT will break for a week and play the next three matches at home, first hosting Bryant in the America East Conference opener on September 28 at 7pm.
