Women's Tennis Edges Out Rhode Island, 4-3

NEWPORT, R.I. — The NJIT women's tennis team opened the month of February by returning to the win column with a 4-3 road victory over the Rhode Island Rams Sunday evening at the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

After claiming the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead, Sandra Dzhambazov put NJIT (2-1) up 2-0 with a three-set win at No. 2 singles. URI (1-2) rallied to tie the match by winning the next two singles flights (Nos. 3 and 1) before a straight set victory by Paula Menendez Alvarez put the Highlanders back in front, 3-2. A come-from-behind, three-set URI rally at No. 4 knotted the match at 3-3, leading the fate of the match to the racquet of Feyza Aydin at No. 6.

Aydin edged out a first set win at 7-5 and held off her opponent in the second to win in straight sets and earn the victory for the visiting Highlanders.

NEXT UP
NJIT will be home at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility for the next seven matches beginning Friday, February 9 at 4 p.m. in a non-conference meeting with fellow Southland Conference member Southeastern Louisiana.
