Women’s Basketball Concludes 2024 at LIU to Conclude Non-Conference Slate

NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT women's basketball team will conclude its 2024 slate on December 30 when the Highlanders visit LIU to wrap up the non-conference schedule.

NJIT leads the all-time series, 3-0.

Last Time Out
Wagner's Julia Fabozzi scored the game-winning basket to give the Seahawks a 62-60 home victory over visiting NJIT Thursday evening in women's basketball non-conference action inside the Spiro Sports Center.

NJIT's Marissa Gingrich knotted the game at 58-all on a tough driving layup with less than three minutes to play.  With the score tied at 60-all, Wagner scored with 5.5 seconds on a driving layup by Julia Fabozzi to give the Seahawks a two-point lead, 62-60, and held on to snap its seven-game skid to secure the home victory.

NJIT had three players reach double-digits paced by freshman Olivia Kukyk who scored a career-best 15 points on 5-of-8 from three-point range.  Alejandra Zuniga netted 13 points while Marissa Gingrich chipped in 12 points off the bench.

1,000 Career Points and Counting
Rising junior Alejandra Zuniga became the 13th Highlander to score 1,000 career points after a tough driving right-handed layup with 2:38 left in the game against Monmouth on December 9, 2024.  Zuniga stands at 1,015 points.

Highlander Highlights 

  • The Highlanders secured its first win of the season at Saint Francis U, an 80-60 road victory.  The 80 points are the most scored by the Highlanders this season.

  • NJIT, 2-9 on the season, has lost five games by five or less points this season, including a one-point overtime loss Hostra (L, 69-74), Army West Point (L, 68-69 (OT)), Lafayette (L, 69-71), Saint Peter's (L, 60-65) and Coppin State (L, 61-63).

  • Alejandra Zuniga is averaging 18.5ppg and 2.9rpg while shooting 47.8% from the field.  She has scored 20+ points or more in five games this season, including a season-best 26 at Rutgers.

  • Zuniga became the 13th Highlander to score 1,000 career points after a tough driving right-handed layup with 2:38 left in the game against Monmouth on December 9, 2024.

  • Freshman Olivia Kulyk has been named America East Rookie of the Week three times this season and is averaging 9.8ppg and 3.9rpg. The Highlanders picked up four out of five America East Rookie of the Week awards.

  • Head Coach Mike Lane is in his seventh season at the helm of the Highlanders.  NJIT went 12-18 overall, 4-12 in the America East and advanced to the America East Postseason Tournament for the fourth straight time.

Scouting LIU
LIU enters Monday's contest with a 3-9 overall mark, most recently falling at VCU, 72-42, on December 21.  

The Sharks three wins have come against Cal State Fullerton, Northeaster and Delaware State.

LIU is led by two players averaging double-digits – Janessa Williams (12.2) and Sirviva Legions (11.8).  Williams tops the team on the boards (6.4).

Next Up
NJIT will open America East Conference action on January 2, hosting Binghamton at 6pm.
