NEWARK, N.J. – The NJIT women's volleyball team concluded its 2024 season on Sunday afternoon, dropping a three-set match to Binghamton inside the Joel & Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center.
Sunday was Senior Day for the Highlanders, with the program honoring seniors
Cami Augustine,
Ines Varela and
Campbell Walker, as well as graduate student
Ilayda Dincer, prior to the match.
The two sides were neck and neck throughout much of set one, with NJIT tying things up at 15-15 midway through the set after consecutive kills from Varela and
Sara Siefert. The Highlanders would grab the lead on the ensuing point after a Binghamton attack error, but the visitors would respond with three straight points to take the lead back. Kills from
Taylor West and
Ema Torres kept NJIT within reach late in the set, but the Bearcats would hold on to take the opening set.
Binghamton would use the momentum from set one to propel it forward to a three-set sweep. The Bearcats would take set two, 25-11, before closing out the match with a third set victory, 25-15.
Augustine registered 10 digs on her Senior Day, while Augustine finished the afternoon with five. Dincer and Varela each collected four kills, while Varela added a pair of block assists. She finishes her career with a program record 317 total blocks, while her 109 blocks this season sit as the second most in a single-season in team history.
