UAlbany Tops NJIT in America East Opener for Highlanders

ALBANY, NY–UAlbany had four players in double-figures led by a game-best 15 points by Helene Haegerstrand on its way to a 77-36 victory over visiting NJIT in women's basketball America East Conference action inside the Broadview Center Saturday afternoon.

The Great Danes, winners of nine straight, improved to 13-2 overall, 2-0 in the America East while the Highlanders moved to 8-6 overall, 0-1 in the league.

UAlbany's Helene Haegerstrand led all scorers with 15 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the field and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line.  Kayla Cooper and Meghan Huerter combined for 14 points and Deja Evans nearly missed posting a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.Senior Aria Myers was the only Highlander to reach double-figures with 10 points followed by Alejandra Zuniga (7pts), Kenna Squier (6pts) and Lilly Anderson (5pts).  Anderson led NJIT on the glass with five rebounds.  Audrey Korman recorded three rebounds, two steals and three blocks.

UAlbany jumped out to a fast 9-2 lead just under the six-minute mark.  NJIT tied up the game early, 9-9, sparked by a three-pointer by Alejandra Zuniga and a tough put back under the basket by Aria Myers at the 2:23 mark.  The Great Danes closed out the quarter on an 8-4 spurt, including a three-pointer as time expired by Helene Haegerstrand for a 17-13 lead.

The Great Danes opened up the game in the second quarter out-scoring the Highlanders 28-6, including a 33-8 run over the last 11:20, heading into the locker room with a 45-19 lead.

Meghan Huerter led all scorers at the half with 12 points, shooting perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc coming off the bench for the Great Danes and as a team UAlbany shot 7-for-12 after the first 20 minutes.  NJIT's leading scorer with five points was Alejandra Zuniga.

A tight third quarter saw NJIT score 11 points in 10 minutes led by Myers who scored five points.  UAlbany outscored NJIT in the final stanza, 20-6, and cruised to a 77-36 home victory in America East play.

NJIT will play two straight at home, welcoming UMass Lowell on January 11am on Education Dat and Vermont on Saturday, January 13 at 1pm.  Both games will be produced on ESPN+.
