Women’s Basketball Falls at Maine; Zuniga Leads NJIT with 15 Points


ORONO, ME–The NJIT women's basketball team fell at Maine, 81-39, Saturday afternoon in America East women's basketball action inside Memorial Gymnasium. 

Maine picks up its fifth straight win of the season, improving to 12-7 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the America East while NJIT, in a tough stretch of its America East Conference schedule, moves to 8-10 overall, 0-5 in the league.

The Black Bears, which shot 44.6 percent from the field, were led by Carolina Bornemann double-double, 27 points and 12 rebounds followed by a double-double from Adrianna Smith (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Anne Simon (20 points, nine rebounds).

The lone Highlander double-figure scorer on the day was sophomore Alejandra Zuniga with 15 points.  Graduate student Kenna Squier chipped in six points while Marissa Gingrich, Aria Myers and Avery O'Roke each added four points for the Highlanders.

Maine poured in 22 first quarter points and exploded for 27 points in the second quarter to take a commanding 24-point lead at the half, 49-25.  

The Black Bears Caroline Bornemann led all players with 20 points and seven rebounds at the half while NJIT's Alejandra Zuniga was the lone Highlander in double-digits with 11 points through the first 20 minutes.

Zuniga scored the first four points of the third quarter but Maine continued to stay in control finishing the third stanza on an 18-3 run in the final 9:02 for a 68-32 lead.

The Highlanders started off the final quarter on a 6-3 run behind four points from Kenna Squier and Maine finished off the contest on a 13-3 run to secure its fifth straight win of the season with a 81-39 victory.

NJIT will continue its three game road trip on Thursday, January 25 at Bryant.  Tip off is slated for 6pm.
