NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT men's volleyball team swept visiting King (TN), 3-0, for the Highlanders first win of the 2024 season Friday afternoon in men's volleyball non-conference action inside the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center.
The Highlanders, who started its season 0-3 after playing two ranked opponents (UC Santa Barbara and CSUN), with the third becoming ranked the following week (UC San Diego), hit .393 as a team, winning in straight sets 25-15, 25-15 and 25-17.
The win for head coach Danny Goncalves was his 100th of his career at NJIT since taking over the reins in 2015.
Sophomore Andrew Fedmasu registered nine kills on 12 attempts with just two errors for a .583 hitting percentage followed by nine kills from Alessandro Negri and six from Carson Williams, who finished with a .556 hitting percentage on nine attempts.
Setter Griffin Fieseler filled up the final box score, piling up a match-best 26 assists to go along with two kills, two service aces, three digs and three total blocks (one solo, two assists).
As a team, NJIT held a 10.5-to-2.0 team blocking led by Fedmasu with five block assists, Negri with four block assists, Antonio Feliciano with four total blocks (one solo, three assists) and Williams (three block assists).
Fedmasu and Fieseler each posted two service aces in the win. Feliciano led all players with four digs followed by Christian Trevino (3) and Fieseler (3).
Grayson Stoudt led Kings with four kills and Aiden Daniels combined for six assists.
NJIT, which will have a quick turnaround, will face Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday at 7pm.
The Highlanders have won the last three meetings, 3-0, against the Mastodons.
