Men’s Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw with Rider

NJIT Highlights vs. Rider | 9.8.23

Post Game Interview with Coach Barboto

NEWARK, NJ–Transfer Alvaro Heredia scored his first goal in a Highlander uniform as NJIT played to a 1-1 draw with Rider in non-conference men's soccer action at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

The draw was the second consecutive for the Highlanders and the fifth all-time against Rider, moving to 1-2-2 on the season while Rider now stands at 2-1-1.

Quote from the Coach
"I think it was a very contested match in a New Jersey Derby with Rider right down the road," eighth-year head coach Fernando Barboto added postgame. "We worked very hard, we were organized and held them off quite well because they have some good attacking players. We got our goal and we had two great chances to make it 2-0 and 3-0 which we should have and then it came back to bite us which usually happens in soccer when you don't score clear chances that you need to score."

How It Happened

  • In the 36th minute, Rider's Ethan Shaw header nearly put the Broncs' ahead 1-0 but a Highlander team save on the backline by Justin Aguirre-Rosas kept the match scoreless.

  • The Highlanders struck first in the 64th on a curling serve into the box by Maximus Barboto and rebounded by newcomer Alvaro Heredia who sent home his first goal in a Highlander uniform for a 1-0 lead.

  • Rider scored the equalizer on a set piece finish by Adel Al-Masude in the 74th minute to the left of a diving Highlander keeper for a 1-1 score.

  • At the final whistle, the Highlanders edged the visiting Broncs in overall shots, 15-14 (5-5 SOG).  NJIT held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
