Sunol’s Goal Gives Men’s Soccer America East Draw Against Binghamton

VESTAL, NY–A late equalizer off the foot of freshman Sebastian Sunol helped the NJIT men's soccer team finish its America East Conference road match at Binghamton in a 1-1 draw Saturday evening at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

After falling behind early in the 26th minute, the Highlanders continued to hold possession and increase pressure.   NJIT finally broke through in the 87th minute as Sunol followed a shot that was blocked by Alvaro Heredia to score the equalizer with under four minutes to play.

The overall shots were in favor of NJIT (4-4-3, 1-0-1 AE) after 90 minutes (11-9) paced by four different Highlanders with two shots – Sunol, Hugo Tavares, Sergio Martinez Cubel and Asembo Augo.  Binghamton moved to 2-6-2 overall, 0-0-2 in the league.

How It Happened

  • NJIT's Asembo Augo had an early scoring opportunity in the eighth minute receiving a centering feed from Alvaro Heredia inside the box.  Augo made a quick turn and left-footed strike which stayed wide.

  • Binghamton got on top 1-0 in the 26th minute on a team-leading third goal by Jack Green assisted by Anthony Lazaridis.

  • Hugo Tavares turned and fired a shot from the middle of the field in the 26th minute but Jack Root made the stop.  Two minutes later, Sergio Martinez Cubel blasted a shot high which was also saved by Root.

  • A free kick by the Highlanders in the 32nd minute sailed just wide on a strike by Martinez Cubel.

  • The shots were even at 6-6 (3-2 SOG in favor of Binghamton) and the Highlanders led 4-2 in corner kicks after the first 45 minutes of action.

  • In the 50th minute, NJIT's Samuel Reisgys made a diving save on a one-time shot by Anthony Lazaridis just inside the box.

  • Co-captain Goncalo Franco returned to the pitch after missing the last five games due to injury and blasted a shot high in the 63rd minute.

  • In the 79th minute, Karmel Segui's header on the doorstep was punched away by Binghamton's Root.

  • NJIT scored the equalizer with under four minutes to play in the match on a goal by freshman Sebastian Sunol in the 87th minute.  The play started with Maximus Barboto serving the ball into the box off a corner kick.  Kendall Thomas elevated and headed the ball back out to the top of the box where Alvaro Heredia's blast was blocked and Sunol picked up the rebound and tucked home to the left of the Binghamton keeper for a 1-1 tie.

  • Graduate student goalkeeper Samuel Reisgys stopped a season-high five saves (5 saves vs. La Salle 9.12.23).

Noteworthy

  • Maximus Barboto scored off a corner kick in the 16th minute as the ball went through the hands of the Binghamton goalkeeper Jack Root and fell over the goal line but the goal was disallowed as an NJIT player inside the box made contact with the Binghamton goalkeeper as Root went to make the save.

  • The goal for Sunol, who entered the game six minutes before he scored the equalizer, netted his first career goal and points of his young career.
