Delaware State Tops Highlanders in Straight Sets


DOVER, DE–Delaware State topped visiting NJIT, 3-0, in straight sets to open the weekend tournament hosted by the Hornets Friday evening inside Memorial Hall.

The Hornets, who won the MEAC and qualified for the 2023 NCAA Tournament a season ago defeated the Highlanders 25-16, 25-13 and 25-20.  NJIT moved to 5-6 on the season.

NJIT was paced by Ines Varela with a team-best seven kills on 16 attempts for a .312 hitting percentage.  Graduate student setter Juliana Impaglia piled up 17 assists and added seven digs for the Highlanders.  Sophomore libero Doga Emil finished with a team-best 10 digs followed by Mariana Cova with eight.

Delaware State, winners of three straight, hit an impressive .364 for the match led by Gerren Tomlin and Valeria Otero who each notched a match-best nine kills.  Tomlin finished the match with a .467 hitting percentage while Ella Sanders combined for a .571 hitting percentage with eight kills on 14 swings with no errors.

In the first set, neither team led by more than two points until the home team scored seven straight points for a 12-7 and later increased its lead to 19-9.  NJIT scored four straight late points but the Hornets would take the first set, 25-16.

Delaware State jumped out to a 9-3 lead to start the second frame.  NJIT cut the Hornet lead to as many as two, 11-8, on a Delaware State hitting error but the Hornets pushed its lead to 20-11 and scored the final five out of six points to take a 2-0 lead with a 25-13 victory.

Both teams traded points early in set three as Delaware State held a one-point lead, 6-5.  The Hornets scored the next seven out of eight points for a 13-6 lead.  NJIT responded back, scoring the next five out of six points, cutting the Hornets deficit to three, 14-11, on a kill by Adriana Goetz-Morales.  The Hornets pushed its lead back up to six, 20-14.  NJIT closed the gap to within three – 23-20 but Delaware State closed out the match, scoring the final two points to earn the 3-0 sweep with a 25-20 victory. 

NJIT will wrap up the Delaware State Tournament on Saturday against Georgetown (11am) and Penn (4pm).

The Highlanders will open up its home campaign on Wednesday, September 20 at 6pm, hosting Manhattan inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.
