First Half Goal Ends in 1-0 Loss at Northwestern

EVANSTON, IL–
Northwestern scored the lone goal of the match and held on to a 1-0 victory over visiting NJIT Sunday evening in men's soccer non-conference action at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium.

Northwestern moves to 2-0 on the season, scoring the only goal of the match  in the 25th minute while NJIT (0-2) fought to the final whistle and were unable to answer.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the fifth minute, sophomore Enrique Mutsoli chased down a through ball, striking the ball with his right foot for the first save of the match for Northwestern.

  • Northwestern's Christopher Thaggard put one on net inside the box but NJIT's keeper Samuel Reisgys made a diving stop.

  • Northwestern broke a scoreless match in the 25th minute on a goal by Rom Brown assisted by Justin Weiss.  Weiss tracked down a ball which nearly went over the goalline, finding a running Brown inside the middle of the box, tucking the ball into the bottom left of the goal for a 1-0 lead.

  • Overall shots were even 3-3 after the first 45 minutes.  NJIT's three shots came in the first 13 minutes of the period – Maximus Barboto, Mutsoli and Asembo Augo each recorded a shot.  The Highlanders held a slight edge in corner kicks 3-2.

  • In the 50th minute, Barboto out on the left wing served the ball into the box for a scoring chance on a header high by Hugo Tavares.  Tavares headed home NJIT's lone goal in the match at UIC on Thursday evening.

  • NJIT with a scoring opportunity in the 71st minute on a running header by Jordi Navio Sanchez towards the back of the box off a long throw-in by Mutsoli saved by a diving Northwestern keeper.

  • In the 79th minute, Reisgys was credited with his fourth save of the match, with another diving save and knocking down a shot by Jayvin Van Deventer.

  • After 90 minutes, Northwestern held a slight advantage in overall shots 8-7 (4-2 SOG).  NJIT led in corner kicks 5-4.

TOP PERFORMERS

  • Reisgys, NJIT's all-time career saves leader, made four stops in goal against Northwestern.  The graduate student has combined for 244 career saves.

  • Six different Highlanders – Barboto, Augo, co-captain Goncalo Franco, Navio Sanchez, Mutsoli and Ramchwy St. Vi were each credited with a shot.

NJIT will host Villanova from the Big East on August 31 in NJIT's home opener at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.  Kickoff slated for 7pm on ESPN+.
