De Chavarria and Fieseler Earn 2023 CSC Academic All-District Honors

CSC Men's Academic All-District At-Large Team

NEWARK, NJ–NJIT men's volleyball players Martin de Chavarria and Griffin Fieseler have been to the 2023 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Men's Academic All-District at-large team for Division I, CSC announced Tuesday afternoon.

De Chavarria and Fieseler were two of the eight combined men's and women's at-large selections NJIT produced - three in women's fencing, two in men's lacrosse, and one in men's fencing.

The 2023 Academic All-District® Men's and Women's At-Large Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the athletic realm and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.

Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced June 21 (men) and June 22 (women). The CSC Academic All-District® teams include the student-athletes listed at the links above.

De Chavarria, a middle blocker from Palma de Mallorca, Spain, was named to the 2023 EIVA All-Academic team for the third consecutive year on April 18 after earning spots in 2021 and 2022.  He was selected this year after posting a 3.77 GPA while majoring in Business.

A four-time EIVA All-Conference honoree, De Chavarria is a two-time EIVA Defensive Player of the Week.  The 6-foot-7 middle blocker ranks third in the EIVA in hitting percentage (.386) and fourth in blocks (1.00).  This season, de Chavarria recorded seven total blocks on three different occasions. 

Fieseler, a setter from Bound Brook, NJ, was named to the 2023 EIVA All-Academic team for the second straight season on April 18 after earning a spot in 2022.  He was selected this year after posting a 3.97 GPA while majoring in Civil Engineering.

The junior played in 17 matches, including seven starts, notching double-digit assists in 12 matches, including four 30+ assist matches. He recorded a season-best 39 assists against Harvard (4.8.23).  His five total blocks in Highlanders win over Sacred Heart (1.14.23).
