UNION, NJ - The NJIT baseball team saw it's six-game winning streak snapped on Sunday as it fell 7-2 to visiting Binghamton at Jim Hynes Stadium.
NJIT already clinched the three-game series win with its doubleheader sweep of the Bearcats on Friday. The Highlanders took game one 1-0 behind a complete game shutout from
Ryan Fischer and an extra-inning walk-off single by
Ray Ortiz. NJIT completed the sweep with a 4-3 game two win that saw
Aidan Kidd and
Grant Vurpillat combine for 15 strikeouts.
The Highlanders only scoring on Sunday came in the bottom of the first inning. After Binghamton scored twice in the top of the inning,
Luke Longo led off the home half of the inning with a walk and came around to score two batters later thanks to Ortiz's ninth home run of the season, which tied the game.
Sunday's game remained tied until the fourth inning when the Bearcats scored four runs to go ahead 6-2. Binghamton added an insurance run in the seventh to make the final score 7-2.
Ortiz recorded a pair of hits to pace the NJIT offense, while
Andrew Elcock and
Austin Francis each added a hit.Â
Holden de Jong and
Liam Reiner were effective out of the bullpen, combining to allow just two hits and one run over five innings of work.
The Highlanders will look to start a new winning streak on Wednesday when they travel to Princeton for a non-conference game. First pitch is slated for 3pm.
