Cumberland, RI - The NJIT men's team rallied from behind to defeat Bryant in its first Southland Conference match of the season on Saturday, earning a 4-3 victory at Fore Court.
The Highlanders bounced back into the win column after seeing their program-record winning streak stopped at 11 last week and are now 12-1 on the season, while Bryant fell to 2-14.
"Championship teams turn out when their moments are a their worst," said Head Coach
Marco Matteucci. We fought through injuries and lineup changes and we were able to get out on top. This is why we play the game, because players can show the best of the themselves when they are called upon."
Bryant jumped in front 1-0 after it took two of three doubles matches by narrow scores of 6-3 and 6-4, respectively.
The Highlanders were able to rally however, winning four of six matches in singles play, including
Pablo Perez Ramos' tight 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 victory at the top position.
"Pablo battled an injury and fought back to win for us" added Matteuci.
In addition to Perez Ramos,
Oscar Callo von Platen,
Wil Jenkins and
Ashwin Kanetkar were all victorious for the Highlanders on Saturday.
"Oscar gave us an edge, Wil took care of his spot, and Ashwin gave us the final point we needed. What a day, on to the next one!" concluded Matteucci.
The Highlanders will travel south for a pair of Southland Conference matches over spring break this week. NJIT will play New Orleans on Wednesday and Nicholls on Friday.
