NEWARK, NJ - The NJIT men's tennis team extended its program-record winning streak to nine on Friday, shutting out visiting Navy 7-0 at the Naimoli Tennis Center.
NJIT remains perfect at 9-0 this season while the Midshipmen saw their record drop to 7-10.
"It was another good day at the office," said second-year Head Coach
Marco Matteucci. "We played very well across the board!"
The Highlanders began the afternoon with wins at #2 and #3 doubles to go ahead 1-0. At #2 doubles
Nejc Skorjanc and
Amine El Kholti paired up for a 6-2 win, and at #3 it was the duo of
Samuel Townes and
Wil Jenkins who were victorious 6-1.
Jenkins made quick work of his opponent at #4 singles, winning 6-2, 6-0 to improve to 9-0 in singles play during his impressive rookie season.
Pablo Perez Ramos also improved to 9-0 with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victory at #1 singles to put the Highlanders ahead 3-0.
The match was clinched with a 6-0, 6-2 win by Oscar Collo von Platen at #4 singles and the Highlanders added victories by El Kholti, 6-3, 6-4 at #2,
Pavel Petrov, 6-3, 6-2 at #5, and
Ashwin Kanetkar, 6-1, 6-3 to win complete the sweep.
NJIT returns to action with a pair of matches on Sunday. The Highlanders will host St. Francis at 11am and NJCU at 5pm.
"We know we have two more challenges ahead of us this weekend," concluded Matteucci.
