NJIT Falls on the Road at Lafayette; Litwinko Nets Team-Best 13 Points


EASTON, PA–The NJIT women's basketball team fell on the road at Lafayette 83-60 despite three players reaching double-digits paced by a team-best 13 points from redshirt junior Lyzi Litwinko Tuesday evening inside the Kirby Sports Center.

Lafayette improves to 2-3 on the young season while the Highlanders move to 4-2 overall and suffer its first road loss of the season.

The Leopards held a 49-25 lead after the first 20 minutes.  NJIT rallied back in the third quarter and outscored the home team, 22-14, trimming the Lafayette deficit to 16, 63-47, but Lafayette would increase its lead to 20+ to secure the 80-63 home victory Tuesday night.

In addition to Litwinko's 13 points, Alejandra Zuniga scored 12 points while Kenna Squier notched 10.  Trinity Williams added nine points.  

Three different Highlanders –Litwinko, Maddilyn Dogs, reigning America East Rookie of the Week and Mackenzie Wright-Rawls each grabbed four rebounds.

Zuniga shared game-high honors with Abby Antognoli, dishing out five assists.

For Lafayette, Makayla Andrews led all players with 24 points followed by Kayla Drummond (16), Halee Smith (14) and Antognoli (13).

Drummond combined for a double-double recording 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds as the Leopards outrebounded the Highlanders 40-to-27.

Lafayette jumped out to a quick 7-2 run three minutes into the game but the Highlanders responded with an 8-2 spurt, cutting the Leopards lead to within one, 11-10, behind four points by Squier, heading into the five-minute media timeout.  The Leopards scored 12 straight points while using a 19-3 run over the last five minutes of the quarter for a 28-13 lead.

The Leopards outscored the Highlanders in the second quarter, 21-12, while scoring the final five points of the quarter, taking a 49-25 advantage into the half.  NJIT's Lyzi Litwinko scored seven points followed by Kenna Squier with six.

NJIT got things going in the second half, using a 9-2 spurt midway through the third quarter, cutting the Leopards deficit to 18, 59-41. The Highlanders went on a 6-0 run over the final 2:37 of the third quarter, trimming the Leopards lead down to 16, 63-47.

NJIT in a stretch of a five game road swing, will break for Thanksgiving and will return to action on November 25 at Hofstra.  Tip-off is slated for 2pm on FloSports.
