NEWARK, NJ–Four players reached double-figures to lead NJIT past visiting Rider, 70-57, in women's basketball non-conference action inside the Joel & Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center.
With the win, NJIT moves to 3-1 on the season, which marks the best start since the 2012-13 season. Rider drops to 1-2 on the young season.
Leading by six at the half, 36-30, NJIT poured in 20 third-quarter points and pushed its lead to as many as 15, 56-41. Rider cut the Highlander deficit down to eight points in the fourth quarter, 56-48 but the Highlanders responded on a 14-3 spurt, taking its largest lead of the day, 70-52 and secured NJIT third win of the season with a 70-57 victory.
NJIT's Trinity Williams and Madilyn Dogs scored a game-best 15 points followed by Alejandra Zuniga (12) and Kenna Squier.
Dogs, a freshman from Kewaskum, WI, set a new personal-best mark with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line. She also added five rebounds and three steals.
Williams was one rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds while shooting 6-for-10 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Williams added two blocks and one steal.
Aria Myers scored six points, going 6-for-7 from the free throw line.
As a team, the Highlanders shot 88.5 percent from the free throw line (23-for-26) and 44.9 percent from the field (22-for-49) in the home victory.
NJIT got a quick start out of the gates, 9-4, behind six points from Madilyn Dogs, heading into the first media timeout. Over the next five minutes, NJIT went on a 13-3 run, increasing its lead to 18-5 at the 2:55 mark. After the first 10 minutes, Dogs already set a new personal-best mark with nine points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field.
Rider cut the Highlander lead to 10, 20-10, behind an 8-0 run to start the second quarter and a three-pointer by Taylor Langan brought the Broncs to within single digits, 27-21, at the 5:33 mark. NJIT scored seven straight to take a 13-point advantage, 34-21, with less than three to go. The Broncs used a 9-2 run to close out the first half, slimming the Highlander lead to within six.
After the first 20 minutes, Kaylan Deveney led all players with 11 points while Dogs paced NJIT with nine points, a new personal best mark for the freshman.
The Broncs went on a quick 5-0 spurt to pull within three of NJIT, 38-35 but a pair of free throws by Dogs sparked a 12-2 run for NJIT, taking a 13-point lead, 50-37, at the 4:27 mark. NJIT finished out the quarter on a 6-2 run capped by a behind the back no-look pass from Zuniga to Reese Vaughan to take a 56-41 advantage.
Rider got momentum to start the fourth quarter, scoring the first seven points, cutting the Highlander lead to eight, 56-48, at the 8:45 mark. NJIT went on a 11-3 run, increasing NJIT's lead to 15, 67-52 resulting in a Rider timeout.
The Broncs were led by Kaylan Deveney's 13 points while Taylor Langan pulled down eight rebounds.
