Delaware Tops Visiting NJIT to Wrap Up Non-Conference Slate

NEWARK, DE–The NJIT men's soccer team wrapped up its non-conference portion of its schedule on Tuesday evening, dropping a 2-1 decision at Delaware inside Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.

The Highlanders, coming off a 1-0 upset over then-ranked No. 15 Vermont on Saturday, moves to 5-5-3 overall.  With the win, Delaware improves to 7-2-4 overall.

Delaware scored the only goal of the first half, taking a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute.  NJIT tied the match at 1-1 two minutes into the second half on a goal by sophomore Alvaro Heredia but the Blue Hens regained the lead, 2-1, in the 79th minute and held on for the home victory.

Sophomore Sergio Martinez Cubel registered the Highlanders first shot of the match in the 27th minute, taking a free kick which stayed wide left.

In the 35th minute, Delaware's Jan Schroeder blasted a rocket off his left foot but reigning America East Conference Defensive Player of the Week Samuel Reisgys made an impressive one-handed save.

Delaware tallied the first goal of the match in the 42nd minute on a goal by Sam Donnellan assisted by Schroeder to give the Blue Hens a 1-0 lead.  The goal for Donnellan, who entered the contest tied for 25th in the nation in goals scored, scored a team-leading eighth goal.

At the end of the first 45 minutes, Delaware led the overall shots (8-2; 4-0 SOG).  NJIT's Reisgys stopped three Blue Hen shots.  Martinez Cubel and Ramchwy St. Vil recorded one shot each in the first half.

NJIT's sophomore Alvaro Heredia, who was recently named to the CollegeSoccerNews Men's National Team of the Week Tuesday morning, scored the equalizer early in the second half (47th minute), burying the ball into the bottom right of the goal, assisted by Enrique Mutsoli.  Heredia has scored in consecutive matches and tops the Highlanders with five goals on the season.

The Blue Hens regained the lead in the 79th minute on a right-footed strike by Richard Monath to give the home team a 2-1 lead.

Resigys, who played the whole 90 minutes in goal for the Highlanders, recorded eight saves, a season-best for the 6-foot-3 goalkeeper from Rimbach, Germany.  The last time Reisgys recorded eight saves dates back to the 2021 America East Semifinals at Vermont on November 10, 2021.

Delaware outshot visiting NJIT 18-6 (10-2 SOG) and 7-1 in corner kicks. Heredia finished with two shots on the night while four different Highlanders notched one shot – Martinez Cubel, St. Vil, Sebastian Sunol and Jack Krongold.
