NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT women's basketball team will wrap up a two-game road swing in the America East on Wednesday, February 1 at New Hampshire.
Game Information
Tip off is slated for 7pm inside Lundholm Gymnasium and will be streamed live on ESPN+ with in-game statistics available on UNHWildcats.com.
All-Time Series
New Hampshire leads the all-time series, 6-3. NJIT will look for the season series sweep as the Highlanders defeated the Wildcats, 54-43 on December 29, 2022 in Newark, NJ.
Last Time Out
UMBC's Laycce Drake hit a three-pointer in the final seconds to earn the thrilling home victory over visiting NJIT, 61-60, in America East Conference action inside Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.
With 1:50 on the clock, NJIT's junior Aria Myers connected on her second straight three-pointer to give the Highlanders a one-point lead, 59-58. Sophomore forward Trinity Williams followed with a steal off an UMBC in-bounds play and hit on one-of-two from the free throw line to push the NJIT lead to two, 60-58, with :02 remaining.
Out of a timeout, UMBC's Drake received the ball on the left side of the floor, took two dribbles and launched a floater just behind the arc off one foot to give the Retrievers a 61-60 lead.
America East Conference
NJIT will begin its third season in the America East and will play a schedule of 16 conference games against the other eight schools. The Highlanders became the 10th full member of the America East on July 1, 2020 and were selected to finish fourth in the 2022-23 preseason coaches poll.
The Highlanders currently sit in fifth place in the America East standings with a 4-4 record with UNH in seventh with a 1-7 mark. This season, NJIT has wins over Binghamton, Bryant, UMass Lowell and New Hampshire. The lone league win for the Wildcats came against UMass Lowell on January 28, a 56-51 victory.
1K Milestone for Kenna Squier
Kenna Squier became the 12th player in the NJIT women's basketball history (5th in the NJIT Division I era) to reach the 1,000 career point milestone on Saturday, January 14 at UAlbany. Squier currently sits with 1,017 points, which is 10th all-time.
On Monday, January 23, 2023, Squier, who scored over 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds at Pope John High School had her jersey number (#24) retired.
Block Party at Binghamton
The 13 team blocks at Binghamton ties the NJIT Division I era record for most blocks in a single season and one block shy of the NJIT all-time record (14 vs. Baruch on February 12, 1996). Trinity Williams combined for career-best six blocks, Squier career-best four blocks and Aria Myers career-high two blocks in the 62-57 victory at Binghamton on January 11.
Flash Back to 2021-22 Season
NJIT finished the season with a 15-15 overall record. The 15 wins are the second-highest win total since moving to Division I (2006-07 season).
The Highlanders, competing in its second season in the America East, were selected eighth in the preseason coaches poll and recorded a program-best nine wins to earn the No. 4 seed in the 2022 America East Conference Playoffs.
NJIT hosted the first-ever America East Conference quarterfinal game on March 5, registering the program's first America East victory and postseason win (NJIT 47, UMass Lowell 33) in over 10 seasons.
The eight road wins is also a new program-best for the Highlanders.
New Kids on the Block
The NJIT women's basketball team added a trio of high school standouts – Avery O'Roke (Winchester, VA), Kyleigh Welsh (Clearwater, FL) and Alejandra Zuniga (Madrid, Spain), who joined the Highlanders in the Fall of 2022.
On the Sidelines
Earlier this summer, fifth-year head coach Mike Lane announced the addition of Colleen Moriarty and Payce Lange as Assistant Coaches. Moriarty and Lange will join fifth-year Assistant Coach Aaron Gratch and Anyssa Sanchez who will begin her third season as Director of Basketball Operations on the sidelines.
Scouting New Hampshire
New Hampshire snapped a seven-game losing streak on January 28 with a 56-51 road victory at UMass Lowell. The win at UML was the first of the season in the America East for the Wildcats. Senior Brooke Kane scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for her second double double of the season in the Wildcats for America East victory of the season.
Avery O'Connor paces the Wildcats with 12.6ppg which ranks fifth in the America EAst while Kane ranks seventh at 12.2ppg. O'Connor and Kane rank seventh and eighth in the league in rebounds per game at 6.3rpg and 6.2rpg.
