HARRISONBURG, VA–The NJIT men's soccer team registered its first win of the 2022 season on a second half goal by sophomore Asembo Augo as visiting NJIT defeated host James Madison, 1-0, to conclude the Fairfield by Marriott Invitational Sunday afternoon.
NJIT (1-0-1), which remains undefeated in 2022, opened the season with a 2-2 draw against Drexel on Thursday in the opening match of the Invitational after goals by Jose Del Valle and Augo and registered its first win of the season with a 1-0 win over James Madison.
HOW IT HAPPENED

Nearly 30 minutes of hard-fought action went by before the first shot was recorded, coming in the 31st minute from freshman Jack Krongold.

Play picked up in the second half with NJIT's graduate student Del Valle recording a pair of shots in the 47th minute.

NJIT scored in the 51st minute off a free kick served in the box by freshman Maximus Barboto to Augo, who headed the ball home for a 1-0 advantage.

In the final 10 minutes of action, both teams combined for three shots with James Madison recording the final chance in the 88th minute.
NOTEWORTHY

The goal for Augo is his second of the season and third of his career. Augo from Mays Landing, NJ, concluded his high school career at Oakcrest High School with 37 career goals and 13 career assists.

The assist for Barboto was the first of his collegiate career after joining the Highlanders in January 2022.

Senior co-captain Samuel Reisgys registered the shutout, recording four saves.

Krongold, from Freehold, NJ, started his first collegiate match.

The Dukes held a slight advantage in shots, 9-8, and corner kicks, 6-4.

NJIT recorded its first all-time win over James Madison. Sunday's match marked the second all-time meeting between the two teams. The Dukes defeated the Highlanders, 2-1, in Newark last season.
