ALBANY, NY–The 2022 NJIT men's soccer campaign concluded on Saturday afternoon as the No. 6 seeded Highlanders were defeated by No. 3 seeded UAlbany in the America East Conference Quarterfinals at Bob Ford Field at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium.
NJIT wraps up the season 5-8-4 overall, 1-4-2 in the America East while the Great Danes (4-7-6) advance to the America East Conference semifinals on Thursday, November 10 at No. 2 Vermont.
HOW IT HAPPENED

UAlbany broke the scoreless match in the 74th minute on a goal by Mohamed Soumah as he received a pass from Jackson Finn which slipped between the NJIT defense, striking the ball to the right of the Highlander keeper for a 1-0 lead.

In the 84th minute, UAlbany converted a penalty kick by Pantelis Panteli to put the Great Danes ahead, 2-0.

In the 30th minute of action, NJIT had a dangerous scoring opportunity on a cross from Alejandro Rabell to a running Jordi Navio Sanchez. Navio Sanchez's shot was prevented by a sliding UAlbany defender to keep the match tied at 0-0.

Four different Highlanders – Navio Sanchez, Andrea Campoli, Matt Moran and Jackson Gould recorded one shot each in the opening 45 minutes.

NJIT held a 4-3 advantage in overall shots while senior goalkeeper Samuel Reisgys made one save on three Great Dane shots faced in the first half.

The overall shots were in favor of UAlbany 10-9. NJIT's Gould, Sergio Martinez Cubel and Navio Sanchez each combined for a pair of shots in the match.

Reisgys, who faced 10 shots, finished with two saves.

Ten Highlanders played in their final collegiate match in a Highlander uniform – fifth-year seniors Luc Smith, J.J. Gaeir, graduate students Anthony Rovito and Jose Del Valle and seniors Alejandro Rabell, Samuel Reisgys, Jose Adames, Arrio Rusnak, Andreas Nicolaou and Eduardo Rossi.

Reisgys, named to the 2022 America East Conference All-Academic team, concludes his career with 237 saves (which tops the NJIT career record book), 61 matches, 22 wins, 10 ties and eight shutouts.

Alejandro Rabell wraps up his Highlander career as the NJIT Division I all-time assists leader with 19 while ranking second all-time at NJIT.

Three Highlanders were named to the America East Conference All-Rookie team – Hugo Tavares (3G, 6PTS), Maximus Barboto (4A, 4PTS) and Andrea Campoli (1G, 2PTS).

The Highlanders earned their third straight America East Conference playoff berth under seventh-year head coach Fernando Barboto.
This season, NJIT registered seven shutouts, which ties the NJIT Division I mark for shutouts in a season (7 in 2016).
